Asshole Extraordinaire

I know that there are plenty of assholes to point out in Texas, but sometimes you have to go national to see the asshole truly express itself. Take Joe Lieberman. After losing the Democratic primary to Ned Lamont, he was recently reelected as senator for Connecticut by running as an independent. Throughout the campaign, Lieberman pledged to caucus with the Ds, calling his party affiliation a "closed issue." But four days after the election, that shit's open wider than Anna Nicole after three tabs of E and a bottle of Boones. The Hartford Courant:

Four days after calling his party affiliation a "closed issue," U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman said Sunday he was "not ruling it out" that he could turn Republican.

He told NBC's "Meet the Press" he will return to Washington as an "Independent Democrat" - "capital I, capital D."

But the R is lurking.

"I'm not ruling it out," he said, "but I hope I don't get to that point. And, I must say, and with all respect to the Republicans who supported me in Connecticut, nobody ever said, `We're doing this because we want you to switch over.'"

Excellent: a threat to turn to the dark side if the Ds don't ignore your history of shitty votes and fucking up party unity. Joe Lieberman, (Asshole - CT).

Well, I grew up in Connecticut, so I knew Lieberman was an asshole a long time ago. Glad everyone else is finding out, though.

SW,
Don't be too quick to call Lieberman an a-hole, he's simply negotiating for a good chairmanship so he can run for president in two years, duh.
I'm sure you will be very happy with him again real soon.

yeah except joe lieberman will _never_ be president. i won't pan out.

(just sayin)

TehT at November 14, 2006 8:35 AM

furthermore, joe could never run for prez as a Republican, especially with the moderate Giuliani throwing his hat into the ring. At least Giuliani loves gay people (oh snap).

Despite being despised by dems nationwide, joe has no choice but to fall in line, or risk political irrelevance in six years.

This is a blatant power play. This guy wants to be courted by both parties for his vote, because he knows that he could single-handedly turn the tides in a close vote. I suspect that CT will be getting TONS of pork these next few years.

It will be intresting to see if the D's can actually lead rather than just whine like bitch maids.

The D's will fuck it up to insure Repbulicans again capture the White House in 08'.

Thank god for Nancy Pelosi the twit from the bay.

Ah, the irrepressible Wonk (R) returns!

Y'know, you're right - the R's might very well take another presidency in 08 with Rudy Giuliani. I think he's somebody the D's can relate to, and somebody the R's can re-build by. He's also pretty popular nationally.

I'd love to see a Giuliani/Obama National Unity ticket! ^_^

No Evangelical group is going to want a man who openly had a mistress in the NYC Mayor's Mansion, married her, and then moved her in. Let's face it, they still have the RNC by the balls and aren't going to allow it - even if it is Giuliani.

Yucca at November 14, 2006 4:10 PM

^^^ That's fine with me - Extremist evangelicals can continue to slide uncontrollably out of the political mainstream. The can hand the Republican nomination to any idiot they want -- but they won't get elected. If the evangelical-voters alienate themselves any more, they'll lose the support of the rest of the GOP and that will be that, as they say.

TehT at November 14, 2006 7:33 PM

That's it! I'm removing Lieberman from my Fantasy Congress team. Hmph!

Noonie at November 15, 2006 11:43 PM

In the event that Democrats pick up more seats in the next cycle (possible considering how many the R's have to defend vs. how many the D's have to defend), Lieberman and his tie-breaking vote, should he turn red, will be on the outside looking in.

He'll caucus with the Democrats. He's a asshole DINO. Hopefully he's not also a moron.
