Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told Wolf Blizter yesterday that it is "unclear" whether his grandparents came to the United States legally or illegally. Sometimes you just can't make up shit this good.
Watch the video via Crooks and Liars.
And the transcript:
BLITZER: Give us your -- tell our viewers who aren't familiar your personal story, how you got to where you are, your grandparents, your parents. They struggled, they came here. I don't know if they came here legally or illegally, but give us the story.GONZALES: Well, three of my grandparents were born in Mexico. They came to Texas. My parents -- both of my parents were born in Texas, extremely poor. My mother...
BLITZER: But when they came to Texas, were they legally documented, were they unlegally documented?
GONZALES: You know, it's unclear. It's unclear. And I've looked at this issue, I've talked to my parents about it, and it's just not clear.
Probably about this unclear.
His lips are moving, He's stuttering. He's lying through his teeth, just like the no-good-flea-ridden weasel that he is.
Wonk:
Can you make up your mind? Being for Republicans isn't really a stance on the issues.
Nice try at a witty response. Make up my mind? Where in this thread did I espouse an opinion? If you’re speaking about giving rights to people who break the law....then yes of course I'm against it. I must be silly to have an affinity for the law.
Idiot.
His grandparents probably walked across the border and stayed. Just like thousands of other South Texans. It was probably 1930 and the border was not a concern. The government was too busy worrying about people drinking alcohol because they were living through the depression.
flea infested? Jeez.
yeah i'm not sure there was such a thing as legal or illegal immigration between Tex and Mex in the 1920s. people just kind of came and went as they pleased. his parents were born in Texas. so was he.
And making up minds, being consistent, that goes both ways. If you don't think people should be blamed or persecuted for being in the country undocumented, then you can't be riding Al Gonzales' shit (or that of his gparents) for coming over illegally just because he's a Republican.
K, Rockstar. We'll be sure to no longer point out any hypocrisy. 'Cause the R's are so undertanding, they'd never call us out for being two-faced about anything...
/give me a break
wizard, i have no fucking idea what you're talking about. I said nothing about him being hypocritical. I was referring to Cody's comment, so back the hell off.
to be clear, i mean go ahead and call him hypocritical if you want, i could give a rat's ass. i wasn't talking about his hypocrisy.
My position is consistent. I think good hard working people should be given a chance. We need immigration reform, but to protect immigrants and the entities where they are moving.
What I am pointing out is that Wonk seems to think its awful for immigrants to come across unless they are 3rd generation and have become the Attorney General.
If these Republicans would have been in charge and had their way in the 30s, Alberto Gonzales' grandparents wouldn't have been able to find work, have children who became citizens, or allow those children to get an education. The attornery general would be a foreign citizen.
Does immigration create issues? Absolutely. Let's deal with those issues like neighbors instead of children.
There wasn't such a things as illegal or legal immigration between Mexico and Texas in the 1930s??!! Glad you're not claiming to be an expert here.
I Thinks it’s awful that these people continue to break the law with impunity and people like you who live in a fantasy world keep defending them.
The 30’s are over dispshit.
O yeah your argument about the Republicans in the 30's is a fallacy. Besides the R's of today and during the 30’s are completely different. For someone who claims to know politics you sure don't know shit about it.
Anonymous - for chrissake - here's what i said -
"i'm not sure there was such a thing as legal or illegal immigration between Tex and Mex in the 1920s"
I didn't say, "There was no such thing" would you people read the goddamned posts?!
i was trying to make a point - and if you've even read one fucking history book you'd know what it is.
Texas-Mexico immigration was VERY different in the early 1990s, and it is in fact extremely possible that he doesn't know the arrangement under which his grandparents came here.
Cody, his parents were born in Texas, they didn't "become" citizens.
Besides, I seem to remember the same people, liberals included, right here on this blog agreeing whole-heartedly that Cheney’s gay daughter should never have been brought into the discussion about his stance on gay marriage. So, I’m not sure what the difference is. According to you guys, Cheney’s private family members have nothing to do with his policy and don’t make him a hypocrite regarding his policy beliefs. Family members, I believe someone said, are “off limits.”
But it’s OK to use Al Gonzales’ private family members to show that HE’S a hypocrite? That’s different … how????
Talk about being inconsistent.
early 1900s, not 1990s.
damn....it isn't that hard to find....
http://www.ciaonet.org/book/dil01/dil01_appendix.pdf
an index of how many "legal" immigrants have entrered the country and what country they came from since 1820
plus the history of the immigration laws....since 1819
Um, did we already discuss the word "unlegally"?
Let me break this down for you again. If the right wing of this Republican Party had its way, being born in the US wouldn't automatically make you a citizen if you were born to foreign nationals. Therefore, if today's right wing party were in control back in the 1930s and had their way, Alberto's parents never would have become citizens because simply being born here wouldn't make you an American. Thus, his parents would be foreign nationals and so would he. Yes, its different in a way. However, here's an incredibly successful person. Attorney, former Texas Supreme Court Justice, and current Attorney General on the USA, who if the right wing of the Republican party would have been in control years ago, wouldn't have had that chance. What young Alberto Gonzales is out there right now? I'll say it again. We have serious issues that need to be dealt with due to immigration. However, none of those issues can seriously be dealt with by "closing the borders" or "building a fence" or "deporting all the illegals". Those "solutions" aren't practical. We can and should work on security. However, one way to do this is by making it more simple to come across in a legal way and to pay taxes on work being rendered. Most of these immigrants are good hard working people that would like to do it the right way. They simply can't because the US has made it impossible. We aren't dealing with a lazy culture of freeloaders here. We're dealing with a hardworking culture that has been pushed out of the opportunity to be legal.
Um so what.
