We learn from the Statesman that a Houston legislator is pushing for a state border militia:
Frustrated by a government that seems unable to stanch the flow of illegal immigrants, a Houston Republican has introduced legislation creating a civilian volunteer militia to patrol the nation's borders, armed with arrest power, guns and the approval to use "any force necessary."Gov. Perry overseeing a volunteer militia?! I'm trying not to laugh my ass off at that. This proposed legislation is just so ridiculous on so many levels. Has this guy not seen El Norte? While not a completely honest depiction of immigrant life (it is a fictional film, after all), one of the lessons of the film is that if people want to get to the USA, they will find a way. A "militia" won't help us in the scheme of things (although it will help to anger a lot of constituents) and will lead to a large number of innocent deaths. The idea that this legislation was proposed by a Texan pisses me off to no end. I'm going to go read my daily La Cucaracha.Commanded by Gov. Rick Perry and other border-state governors, the Border Protection Corps would add another line of defense against terrorists, smugglers and gangs eager to prey upon the United States, U.S. Rep. John Culberson said.
Like the new look BTW - very soothing colors in a very unsettling time and place.
To hell with Canada... way to cold... let's trade them Texas for the Yucatan... mmmmmm...Cozumel!....Margaritas! TACOS!
With demographic changes what they are, maybe this and other callous ideas will deliver Texas back to the Ds. But I'd hate for someone to be martyred over it. Culberson sounds so Third World.
How ironic that the guy's name is Culberson. My hometown is in Culberson county in far west Texas, and they've recently discovered the bodies of three people who died from heat related dehydration trying to make it through the desert. It's been difficult for the law enforcement and emergency medical personnel there to come to terms with. I'm sure they'd just *love* to have some help from a volunteer militia. This is the kind of thing that will get get way out of hand and make it even harder for them to do an already trying job.

If Culberson's militia had been in place, it's likely they would not have gotten across the border and would thus not have died.
Dear "A,"
"If Culberson's militia had been in place, it's likely they would not have gotten across the border and would thus not have died. . ."
A bunch of used-to-air-conditioning, retired Texans will stop these guys in their tracks. Okay, sure. How? By shooting them? Then they'd die anyway, just more suddenly. I suppose this appeals to you.
Thus, indeed. I take it every single one of your ancestors was born on U.S. soil.
New Mexico has a border militia and its founding director resigned just a few months ago, because, he said, its volunteer ranks were attracting itchy-trigger-finger racist zealots who thought of it as target practice.
The only obvious solution to keep the brown savages out of our white Christian nation is a very tall fence - no a wall. A very high wall, with razor wire on top - and electrified too. Oh, and place some small land mines at the base too - for the vermin that do make it over. There also must be guard towers ever few hundred yards. They can be manned by our new Texas militia - headed by our glorious Christian leader Perry.
Yes, a wall is what is needed. Now, get to work you brown savages that have made it over here before our great white wall has been constructed! My lawn needs mowing! Or I won't pay you your 75 cents!
Odd since Texas is now a white minority state - as was announced today. Whites now make up less than 50% of the population of Texas. Instead of fighting this change with militia's, the national guard, etc., we should embrace the people that still wish to come here. Ironic since I am considering a move to Canada - I say, let 'em have it!
