I said "Hey, Baby" to Chris Bell

My notebook and I met Chris Bell Wednesday afternoon and I tried to take copious notes. Well, here at least are the basic summaries of his answers.

BB: Who the hell is Chris Bell, and why should we consider voting for him?

CB: There is a desperate need for leadership. Our state is last place in every category and it's time to try something new. I've shown reliability in city and federal positions. I'm a public servant who builds consensus and is solution-driven. It helps to have the perspective of a husband and a parent of public school children. The focus shouldn't be just tax reform, but tax reform and quality reform.

BB: How do you plan on capturing the public's attention?

CB: Every major candidate does. Candidates receive 100% name ID. Announcing will definitely help. I've been getting pretty good attention for a non-official candidate, and the internet is a big part of that.

BB: I read that you said you take responsibility for your mistakes. What do you think about the lack of such accountability in politics?

CB: It's good to step up and say when you've made a mistake, to demonstrate that you've learned from that. You only compound the problem by not admitting a mistake.

A good example is college tuition deregulation. It's a mistake, but those who forced it through will continue to protect it and if they succeed, it will only get worse.

BB: Your thoughts on Kinky Friedman? Carole Keaton Strayhorn?

CB: Kinky's a humorous guy who I've enjoyed listening to over the years. I once won a pitcher of beer for singing a Kinky Friedman song.

As far as Carole, I'm glad she's in the race.

BB: What do you think about gay marriage? For real, now.

CB: I don't support gay marriage, but the constitutional amendment doesn't make sense. It's designed to drive a wedge instead of building bridges. I support civil unions, because everyone deserves equal protection. President Bush agrees! There shouldn't be a referendum on gay marriage.

BB: If knowledge=power, do you think the current level of school funding and lack of commitment to our public education system is a plot to keep Texans down?

CB: If so, it's working. We're down in just about every category. The economic impact of education trumps everything else. There is a clear connection between education and where we find ourselves as a state now. We need a governor with a commitment to having the best schools.

BB: What is the last book you read?

CB: The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. It's about how little things can make a big difference. It was recommended to me by Brewster McCracken.

BB: How do you, as a candidate, reach out to more than just Democrats?

CB: There needs to be focus on common ground. We need solutions to problems regardless of party. What we're doing now isn't working.

BB: Do you consider yourself a feminist?

CB: Yes, and my record from city council and Congress support that position.

BB: When will you announce whether you are running or not? The foreplay is making us frustrated.

CB: People have been patient, but I will try to decide by the end of this month.

BB: Habla espanol? (can't get accents to publish, damn it!)

CB: Un poquito. I'm taking lessons. My children would say daddy knows nada. We have the same Spanish teacher.

BB: How does your faith impact your actions/issues?

CB: I pray for guidance and use my faith as a touchstone. I'm glad for the values debate, and the discussion about their roles in politics. Poverty is a moral issue and should be part of the moral agenda. If we are going to talk about abortion, we need to talk about teen pregnancy. Our state's teen pregnancy rate is one of the highest in the nation.

BB: And last, but not least, inquiring minds want to know, boxers or briefs?

CB: Boxers.

After these questions, we discussed some other things, which I'll do another post on. But to explain the title of this post, Jason and Chris told me a story in which a female Bell staffer viewed Rick Perry walking through the Capitol with his hands free, a staffer holding a cell phone to his ear. He couldn't hold his own cell phone, but he could flirt with the Bell staffer, saying, "Hey, Baby". It really was a cute story. Okay, more to come later today. But this is the main interview.

c'mon...answer one question - is he governorial?

casey at July 14, 2005 9:22 AM

Hand to God, he hasn't made up his mind all the way. A couple of internal hurdles, but if you want to know, then sign up for email updates at ChrisBell.com. Those folks will know first.

Jason Stanford at July 14, 2005 9:25 AM

Ehh I'm Still A KINKY man. Mainly for his slogan. "Why The Hell Not!" Not only that but he said that gay people should be able to be as miserable as anyone else that gets married. I have a a great idea ban marriage in general!!!! Its a 2 person pyramid scheme!!

LiberalDuck at July 14, 2005 10:15 AM

Ask any GLBT consultant and they will tell you that if you want to get elected in Texas, where the vast majority are still bass ackwards, you've got to say you are against "gay marriage." As progressives, we've got to learn how to play the language game or the neo-cons will use it against us everytime.

Marie at July 14, 2005 10:32 AM

or maybe just maybe chris speaks the truth. maybe he is against gay marriage...which is up to him. could be a religious thing. at least he says he's against the amendment...wish to god he'd take it a step further and say "government's got no business messing w/ marriage anyway b/c it's a religious sacrament." but nobody'll say that.

to jason...dont ya mean "us folks will know first" since you're with the campaign? :o)

that is all.

casey at July 14, 2005 10:55 AM

ps: being a neo-con has nothing to do with gay marriage.

casey at July 14, 2005 10:57 AM

Casey,

True enough. I will probably know before the folks on the ChrisBell.com email list. And Alison and the boys will know before me. And probably his dad and some other people way above my pay grade in life. And Chris will know.

But if you want to know before you read it elsewhere on a blog or in the papers, then you have to sign up, sucka.

Jason Stanford at July 14, 2005 11:09 AM

Wonderful reporting job, Bluebonnet. If I didn't know any better, I'd say a real journalist did the interview.:)

Nate-N at July 14, 2005 11:58 AM

Actually, Casey, it's a wedge issue the likes of Warren Chisum, Rick Perry, George Bush and others exploit very well, especially at election time. Not that Chisum is neo-anything.

Marie at July 14, 2005 12:40 PM

Does anyone think that Kinky will benefit from the famous name/not a politican/would-make-a-quirky-governor-and-therefore-I'll-vote-for-him rash that has been infiltrating politics (i.e. Ventura and Aaah-nold)?

Newbie-an Princess at July 14, 2005 12:44 PM

None of this really matters - Roy Spence is going to run and have the support and endorsement of former President Clinton. Spence will be the Democratic nominee for Governor - not Chris Bell, who is only 4-4 in his politicla track record.

Spence has his own personal wealth to put into a campaign - Bell doesn't have squat.

Toby at July 14, 2005 3:24 PM

He's also a marketing genius. Wish I thought I really knew his politics. Any particular insight?

Don't Mess W/ Pink at July 14, 2005 5:12 PM

Roy Spence is going to run and have the support and endorsement of former President Clinton.

Source for this, please, Toby?

Or are you just making it up?

PDiddie at July 14, 2005 8:39 PM

If Roy Spence runs for Governor, I'll eat my hat. That is, I'll eat a hat-shaped cake. But only if it's chocolate.

And just in case anyone wants to fall in love with the Roy Mirage, he's a Wal-Mart consultant who was part of the brain trust that thought Bob Krueger's "Hasta La Vista" commercial was a GOOD idea.

Hasta La Wal-Mart at July 15, 2005 9:34 AM

Personal wealth is the one indicator that translates into victory in a statewide election.

Mr. T. Sanchez at July 15, 2005 9:57 AM

OK, change "marketing genius" to "has had some success representing facist conglomerates." (Really? The Krueger commercial? Oh, my.) I've seen him speak, though, and he can talk a good game. He's also pretty funny. Has he ever said what he stands for politically? (Not that it would be easy to ignore the Sam Walton connection.) He hangs out with centrist Dems, but all I've ever seen him say is that he might be interested in running for office.

Don't Mess W/ Pink at July 15, 2005 10:41 AM

HAHAHA at Mr. T. Sanchez's remarks.

RawHide at July 15, 2005 12:30 PM

i have to wonder - what is the relevance of the gov candidates' position on the gay marriage amendment? That thing's going to be written into the constitution long before they even know who the nominees are. and i guarantee you texans will not vote it back off the constitution. no way in hell. once it's in, that sucker's stayin in. I guess maybe whoever's gov could push for an amendment stripping the civil-union part of it and give it back to the voters that way. but yeah. good luck with that.

drinks at the stephen f at July 17, 2005 4:23 PM

During Chris Bells tenure in Congress, he actively legislated and voted on behalf of the GLBT community. The Human Rights Campaign gave Chris Bell 100% in their yearly Congressional score card. The Houston HRC awarded him with their Political Equality Award for his dedication to equality. The record speaks for it self, Chris Bell has not only preached about political equality. Chris Bell promised and delivered, his records shows his support by voting in issues that concerned our community such as:

 Marriage Protection Amendment
 Marriage Protection Act
Local Law Enforcement Hate Crime Prevention Act of 2004
 Permanent Partners Immigration Act
Early Treatment for HIV Act of 2004
 Employment Non-Discrimination Act
 Policy Pledge of Non-Discrimination
Co-Sponsored Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligation Act of 2003
Co-Sponsored Tax Equity For Health Plan Beneficiaries Act of 2003
Co-Sponsored Family Medical Leave Inclusion Act

As governor of Texas we know that Chris Bell will actively support our community.

There are misconception of Chris Bells support and endorsement for Jay Aiyer. The facts are that Chris and Jay have a long rooted work relationship by which maybe Chris based his best judgment to endorse and put his trust in Jay because he truly believed Jay Aiyer would be good for Houston. Jay Aiyer served as his treasurer in Chris Bells last campaign. Chris is quoted describing Jay as smart as they come when it comes to public policy and it would be very advantageous for the City of Houston to have him on Council. On the other hand Sue Lovell was not endorsed not because she is not qualified, but perhaps Chris had determine to give his support to Jay.

The facts are the facts, endorsing Chris Bell a long-time GLBT Houston ally and
Democratic front-runner is the best way to actively seek for a voice to speak on our behalf when it comes to Texas public policy. We can also be sure, that he will make us part of his administration, he is as inclusive as they come.
