From a tipster today on possible candidates for The Cowardly Madla's Senate seat.
Two possible opponents for Madla, the Dem who flipped on HJR 6: Carlos Uresti and Robert Puente. Both are exploring primary challenges against Madla.
(We know we are all about the photos today, but come on...you so wanted to see that photo again!)
Draft Pete!
Robert Puente was one of a few from the Bexar County delegation to vote NO on HJR6. But he is pretty deep in SBC's pocket. Then again, so is the rest of the delegation.
PS - Why is Big Sister is tracking me with the security code?
Har! The security code is to defeat the tons of spam comments we get. We don't track it at all. Comments are as anonymous as you want them to be. The security code just makes sure you're a real person and not a casino or online poker 'bot'. :)
David Leibowitz lives in that district also and I think he represents the largest share of the Bexar County vote.
40% of the district is in Bexar County and 60% is not in Bexar County. I'm sure Gallego is counting on a bunch of Bexar County candidates to dilute the vote and possibly give him the nomination without a runoff.
I know that Gallego is having a "forum" in San Antonio this week. I wonder if he's trying to establish his name in Bexar County?
But are any of these candidates an improvement over Madla?
Puente and Uresti are Craddick Ds who abandoned Laney.
Gallego was Governor Bush's go to Democrat to get a compromise from Democrats on a lot of bad legislation while Bush was Governor.
Jobu, I appreciate the thought behind your question, "... are any of these candidates an improvement over Madla?" Certainly none of the names that have been mentioned has earned his "Profile in Courage" award yet. But the sad truth is that Frank Madla long ago lost sight of whom he represents and why. For that reason, ANY of them would be an improvement.
The fact is that Bush won that district and in 2002, Sanchez got 40% and even Sharp got only 47%.
I haven't looked too closely beyond that but can a liberal Democrat from Bexar County or Alpine hold that seat in a general election?
Fact is, Sanchez and Sharp both took the district overwhelmingly...look at the data again bud. And Bexar County is roughly half the district, not 40%
Please keep us posted. While I understnad the need to protect incumbent Dems, Senator Madla flat out betrayed us. He could have stopped HJR 6 if had had an ounce of Courage. Let's show him There is No Place Like Home.
I stand corrected, I was looking at the statewide numbers. Sanchez got 56% and Sharp got 60%.
I still don't see the point in spending the money to defeat a Democratic incumbent and replacing them with a Craddick crony.
The absolute best possible candidate for this seat is Pete Gallego. He has served with distinction in the House for more than a decade at this point, and his presence in the Senate would be felt immediately.
There are few members of the House (Coleman, Burnam, Dunnam, Hochberg, perhaps) who could be called LESS of a Craddick D than Gallego. Anyone who claims otherwise obviously hasn't watched a single debate for the last two sessions. Name a progressive issue where Gallego is weak. Name a community that gets screwed over that Gallego hasn't fought long and hard for. You can't do either, because the guy is a badass. He can win this district and he should absolutely not hesitate to run.
His being elected will do a couple of things. First, it will elevate him to the top ranks of Democratic leadership in the state. I suppose he is already there, but he'll be in the public eye a lot more. Secondly, it will give us the only West Texas Democrat in the entire State Senate-- giving us a foothold into this part of the state. Thirdly, it will give us a great leader for the future-- an articulate, passionate, intelligent Latino leader in the Senate. In 6 or 8 years he'll make Obama look like the cure for insomnia.
Pete Gallego really is the future of this state and he deserves this seat.
i heard his forum tonight was a success. of course puente and uresti attended.
there really isn't a better candidate than pete gallego for this seat. he is a proven leader and would make the transition to the senate painlessly.
even more importantly, he has encouraged the next generation of hispanic leaders to run for and be successful in office. you would be hardpressed, short of some craddick D's here and there, to find a detractor among his colleagues. Liebowitz is a solid up and coming talent, but having already run for and lost the VDP seat and just winning the house seat would probably lend a transparency to his ambition that even he couldn't overcome.
He performed admirably this session, but still has much to learn. Gallego is a seasoned veteran that knows how to cut deals and get legislation passed. he is as solid a Democrat there is and should be rewarded over the current coward that holds the seat.
just sayin...

I haven't gotten anything done today. I feel like a fog, but what can I say? I've just been letting everything wash over me lately, not that it matters. Shrug.
Not much on my mind lately. My life's been completely boring these days. I've just been hanging out not getting anything done. So it goes.
I just don't have anything to say , but shrug. So it goes. Not much on my mind recently. I can't be bothered with anything recently.
I haven't gotten anything done recently. I've just been hanging out doing nothing. I haven't been up to anything these days, but it's not important. Today was a total loss.
I haven't been up to much these days. Today was a loss. Nothing seems important. I've just been letting everything happen without me these days.
I've just been staying at home not getting anything done. I've basically been doing nothing worth mentioning. My life's been pretty unremarkable these days. Eh.

I've just been staying at home waiting for something to happen. Whatever. Not much on my mind lately. I guess it doesn't bother me.

Basically nothing seems worth thinking about. I haven't been up to much these days. I just don't have much to say right now. I can't be bothered with anything , but whatever.

I do think it's time for Frank to enjoy the twilight years. He's pretty much been furniture for the last couple session, except for his Internet wine sales bill (an issue the Supreme Court had the unmitigated gall to take away from him).
There's no shortage of talent, either. In addition to the two you named, there's Pete Gallego out in Alpine, trying to keep the wind from blowing West Texas away.
