Mary Denny Rocks the Vote

HB 1706 was approved by the House today. Everybody keeps saying this is a "poll tax" and will potentially prevent some elderly and poor from voting, or their vote being cast as a "provisional ballot." We love that term, provisional ballot, cause we know what that means: you vote does not count and will most likely never be counted.

The AARP sent letters opposing the measure to all of the members. Rep. Denny says that their is rampant voter fraud in Texas. Gee, remember when we started this session with the Hubert Vo challenge? Remember how their really wasn't any fraud found that amounted to anything? Did you see Denny (the Chairwoman of the Elections Committee) could not come up with any specific cases of voter fraud in Texas?

One question: Where the hell is voter outrage over this measure?

Seeing none, PinkDome endorses disenfranchisement of Texas voters. Adjourned.

I am so pissed off with this entire body. It is no longer a process but what Craddick Dewherst and Perry the I hate Ferries says. We need a fucking counter culture to kick Mary Denny's ass. How the hell does she get to be chair...she is about as smart as a chair...where are the groups that will be forced out of the process by this? everyone is just so freakin tired...blah blah blah. 27 freakin days left before we start taking betrs on the first special session

Having to show a drivers license, oh my God! The horror. I'm being lynched, raped, taxed.... What about my right to vote early and vote often.

Alf Landon at May 3, 2005 9:55 AM

white privileged dorks should just keep their mouth shut on this issue..got it Alf?

Jake at May 3, 2005 9:57 AM

Yeah Alf, back off. The well established white privilege of having a drivers license is obviously a conspiracy to disenfranchise minortiy voters as we all know that minorities do not drive. Oh wait, they do and Jake is a moron.

snrub at May 3, 2005 11:19 AM

Is the AARP a bunch of morons, too? Sure, this isn't the worst idea ever...but we've got a driver's license. The point is, the opposition to this legislation has a point, too. If you register to vote, you're registered...you've proven your identity once, so now go vote. Big whoop.

PinkDome at May 3, 2005 12:16 PM

It's about the consolidation of power. THEY can put up barriers for people to vote, inadequately fund our schools, restrict by law to whom people are allowed to care for and marry, and damn it, make sure they have a tight grip on a woman's reproductive system. Meanwhile, the air is dirty, our children aren't learning and now, thanks to Bohac, we won't be able to go to taco stands anymore. It's not coincidence that all of this legislation puts the so-called minorities on the defense. These people are drafting all these laws because they know the uppity, racist, in-bred, bass ackwards mentality is sooooooo last century and they've got to seize power while they can.

Proving your identity to register to vote and accepting that registration as proof of ID are entirely different ideas. As for the AARP, I'll take the high road.

snrub at May 3, 2005 2:39 PM

snurb- I hope you will work the polls to drive people home to get their electric bill so they can particpate in democracy. It would be a shame if they just got frustrated and did not return to vote wouldn't it...oh I forgot the R's lose when more minorities vote...pay backs are hell

Can I borrow your car?

snrub at May 3, 2005 6:57 PM

Legislators should have to front their I.D.'s before casting a vote. Would cut down on those durn verifications. And phantom voting...

Edmonton dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey's Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
