That's it Folks, 102 Ayes on HJR 6: Texas Legislates Hate

In a 2 hour and 53 minute debate today the State House of Representatives voted yes on the hate legislation banning same-sex marriages. Read our live blog below. When the record vote is released call your legislator and thank them if they were courageous and voted the right way or if they were a bigot and voted the wrong way.

In case you happen to be a gay youth reading this post, or a gay adult Texan, we'd like to make this clear. THE STATE OF TEXAS HATES YOU, The State of Texas believes you are a threat to their families. PinkDome suggests you gather your belongings and leave.

Al Edwards and Sylvester Turner voted for this legislative abomination.

Even Martha Wong didn't do that...

PDiddie at April 25, 2005 5:26 PM

Al Edwardws tooks offense to a social ill(LGBT Texas) being compared to a civil rights issue.

That man is toast. I moving to Houston to work on campaign to get rid of him and Martha Wong.

Jake at April 25, 2005 5:48 PM

Martha Wong in essence voted against the amendment because she didn't give them her "yes" vote, forcing them to depend on Ds - she later said it's because she had montrose in her district and couldn't vote in favor of it. What she didn't say, but what's also true, is that an outright vote against it would be used against her in her primary next time. This was the right vote for her to make and the advocates who know what's up under the dome agree that she deserves credit for that. Her PNV vote was a "no" without putting her office in jeopardy. Give her props. As for Al Edwards, well, fry him.

Also, check out terry keel's votes on the farrar and anchia amendments. He's in favor of civil unions. In the end, though, he caved. Politics. Gotta love 'em. Who's going to fall on their sword for this issue?
(Dewhurst?)

Can somebody please do a little digging and tell us how many of the legislators who voted FOR HJR 6 are either a) divorced or b) separated from their spouses. I know at least one member who separated from his wife after he began cheating on her... Why hasn't LGRL done research on marital fidelity / infidelity?

Patrick Timmons at April 26, 2005 2:16 PM

Sylvester Turner voted for this bullshit? Why? I'm truly dissappointed.

I'm - of course - proud to know that Elliott Naishtat voted against it, but that "no" was probably never in doubt.
