Friday, April 1, 2005 "Youth Poetry Slam Performance"
TIME: 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
PLACE: GSD&M - Idea City (828 W. 6th St.)
State Representative Mark Strama invites you to meet Austin's Youth Poetry Slam Champions. Come hear them perform their poetry and help them practice for nationals. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to help pay for the poets to travel to San Francisco for the national youth poetry slam at the end of April.
Read the extended entry for my own Poetry Slam
Spent my college years volunteering and electing
graduated and landed in the Senate, spending my days
giving tours and taking care of snot-nosed pages.
When I worked my way up to paid staffer I thought I'd made the big time
but then when we lost I was fired on a conference call.
Politics eats at me like a bad addiction
I can't get rid of my affliction
Like an abusive relationship I keep coming back for more
hoping to not feel like a whore
Dejected and out of luck, I realize my career choice sucks
i was at the Austin Youth Slam Championship where these fine young folks won. they're an exceptional group. Shannon Leigh performed with my student writer's group at the Texas Book Festival in 2001 when she was all of 14 and already dynamite.
i was most surprised to find that Strama was a judge at the slam title bout, but more so that he was a very astute one. he apparently has had more than a passing interest in slam.
support these kids!
